Richard Serra was born in San Francisco in 1939. He received a BFA and MFA from Yale University in 1964. As the recipient of a Yale Traveling Fellowship and a Fulbright grant, Serra was able to spend a year in Paris and a year in Florence. Influenced by his jobs as a student working at steel mills and shipyards Serra uses steel and lead to create his sculptures.

Serra has exhibited extensively in major museums and exhibitions in the United States and abroad, and has created site-specific sculptures for both public and private venues in North America and Europe. A survey exhibition of his work was exhibited in 2007 at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. He lives in New York and Nova Scotia.
