The Ralls Collection Presents New Photographs and Ambrotypes by Renowned Artist Tom Baril

Washington, DC (April 1, 2002):  New work by photographer Tom Baril will be exhibited at The Ralls Collection starting April 18, 2002.  In addition to the lush flowers and stately architectural prints for which Mr. Baril is known, the gallery will also be exhibiting his latest photographic undertaking:  ambrotypes. Created in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer, the ambrotype process creates unique prints on plates of glass that are often finished with a layer of varnish. Mr. Baril’s ambrotypes transform their subjects into antique, preserved objects.

When viewing one of Tom Baril’s botanic photographs for the first time, many people exclaim “That looks like a Mapplethorpe!”, referring to the floral work of the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.  After receiving a B.F.A. in printmaking from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Mr. Baril indeed started his career as Mapplethorpe’s main printer, where he perfected the same rich sepia tones he employs today in his own work.  Says Mr. Baril of his photography,”...I strive to achieve the depth and luster of a fine vintage print.  In an age when the medium is becoming more and more high-tech, I borrow from the past and use modern materials to achieve a look that is both contemporary and faithful to the past.  I aspire to create something that is uniquely mine.”  Employing the ambrotype process is a natural progression for Mr. Baril, as it is simply another method to achieve the same ends.

Mr. Baril has published two books of his work, Tom Baril (1997), now sold out and selling on the secondary market, and the more recent Botanica (2000).  His work is represented in public and private collections throughout the world, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, and the George Eastman House.

Attention Editors: The Ralls Collection will be holding a private reception with the artist on April 17, 2002. To attend the reception or receive more information, please call (202) 342-1754. Visuals available upon request.
