Tom Baril Washington, DC Portfolio
The Ralls Collection has commissioned renowned photographer Tom Baril to create a Washington DC Portfolio using an innovative and unique medium: photogravure. For this new project, Mr. Baril has created a portfolio of ten images illustrating the rich history of the Washington area. From the noble image of the Lincoln Memorial to the ghostly silhouettes of the graves of Arlington National Cemetery, Baril’s portfolio provides an epic view of the architectural and natural landscapes of the Washington area. His decision to work with the photogravure medium makes these works incredibly poignant. A photographic printmaking process originating in the early 1850s, photogravure is celebrated for its ability to create a rich range of tones and illuminate the subtle nuances of the subject. Using the best modern papers and unique toning techniques, Baril strives to achieve the depth and luster of a fine vintage print.
